Millions of people have macular degeneration and millions of them continue to do everything they always did. AMD does not cause blindness; there is always sight available. The peripheral vision you retain can be used very effectively. Driving becomes difficult, but there are solutions for every problem. Bioptic or binocular vision may be an option for driving with low vision.
Bioptic telescopes are glasses that contain miniature telescopes mounted toward the top of the eyeglass lens. They function in much the same way as binoculars by enlarging images, which allows the visually impaired individual to see things that are further away. Drivers using a bioptic telescope look through their regular eyeglass lenses most of the time, and only sight through the telescope for short periods of time. This allows the driver to resolve fine details such as road signs and traffic lights by glancing briefly and intermittently into and out of the miniature telescopic unit.
