Meet the Doctors

Jacalyn R. Ely, O.D.

Dr. Jacalyn R. Ely has been practicing optometry for over 30 years. She holds a Bachelors of Science degree and a Doctorate of Optometry degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. While her practice is devoted to family vision care, Dr. Ely specializes in low vision, helping patients who are visually impaired. She is certified in the management and treatment of ocular diseases. In addition to her practice, Dr. Ely is an adjunct professor at the Maryland General Hospital and the University of Maryland School of Medicine, teaching low vision and contact lenses to ophthalmology residents for over 15 years. She is a long-standing member of the Maryland Optometric Association (MOA), the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD), and American Optometric Association (AOA), for which she is the Maryland state affiliate chairperson for the Vision Rehabilitation Committee.

Sanford R. Cohen, OD, FCOVD

Sanford R. Cohen, OD, FCOVD began practicing optometry in 1979 after graduating with a Doctorate of Optometry at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Through continuing education, study groups and self-study, he earned his fellowship in developmental optometry from the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (FCOVD) in 1985. Dr. Cohen's undergraduate studies at Virginia Polytechnic and State University culminated in a Bachelors Degree in Biology in 1975.

Since 1981 he has maintained a private practice in partnership with Jacalyn Ely, OD where they offer family vision care through a developmental/behavioral approach. Drs Ely and Cohen opened a second office in 1990. Dr. Cohen is certified in the management and treatment of ocular diseases and orthokeratology. He is a long-standing member of the Maryland Optometric Association, American Optometric Association, College of Optometrists in Vision Development and Optometric Extension Program. Dr. Cohen has served on several boards including Developmental Delay Resources, Optometric Council of the National Capital Region

Dr. Fawziya Mirza, OD

Dr. Mirza joined our practice in February of 1997. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from the University of Maryland and a Doctorate of Optometry from the New England College of Optometry. Dr. Mirza practices full scope optometry specializing in contact lenses, treatment of dry eye, ocular allergies and computer vision related problems. She is certified in the evaluation, diagnosis and management of ocular disease.

Dr. Mirza is a member of the American Optometric Association. She has participated in international missions providing eye care to underserved populations with Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH) .  She has worked in conjunction with Hellen Keller International, Inc. to establish the ChildSight program to provide the inner city students of Baltimore free eye care and glasses.
