As a parent, it is important to identify behavioral signs of vision problems in your child. If your son or daughter has one of these symptoms, he or she may have a vision problem and should be evaluated by a developmental or pediatric optometrist.
Does your child experience any of the following eye symptoms?
- One or both eyes drift inwards or outwards
- Squints to see even when there are no bright lights or glare
- Tilts or turns head to one side
- Poor eye-hand or eye-body coordination
- Lacks interest in or avoids books, puzzles and other visual activities
- Excessive rubbing of eyes when not tired
- Sits too close to the television or computer screen
- Holds books or toys either too close or too far
- Closes or covers one eye often
- Extremely sensitive to light
- Milky or cloudy pupils (if which case, you should seek medical attention immediately)
- Crusty lids
- Red eyes
- Tearing that is unrelated to crying
- Eyes frequently move back and forth
- Headaches as a result of an extended period of visual activities
- Double vision
- Recognizes colors, shapes, letters or numbers with difficulty
- Family history of vision or learning problems
